Holyoke Consumer Health Library

Meeting Ð Health Literacy Workshop

November 17, 2003

Holyoke Public Library

2:00 PM

Present:

Sandy Ward, Sandra Lawson, Doug Fluery, Jim Craig, Chris Lapon, Kathleen McDonough, Omaida Perez, Jody Spitz, Lauri Turkovsky, and Miriam Jusino.

1.

Sandra Lawson guided meeting members through the FRY method for determining the literacy level of health related publications. The FRY method was developed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and can be used for any published format including web sites. In addition to text, the layout, design, and symbols in a publication also affect readability levels. Participants tested the FRY method on a variety of agency publications. The HCHL brochure in its current state registered between high school and college level readability and will need to be revised for consumer use. Sandra Lawson volunteered to work on this.

2.

There will be no meeting in December. On January 26, 2004, organizational consultant Craig Dreezen will be meeting with the HCHL to help us target our future goals and activities.

3.

Meeting adjourned at 3:15.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathleen McDonough
