Holyoke Unites - a proposal for an Information Directory
- Introduction
- Holyoke Unites - proposal
- Examples of websites, databases, and directories for our consideration
- Examples of online calendars
- Historical and background notes
The discovery in spring 2007 that Holyoke has at least 37 separate Coalitions surprised many people and led to a call for a directory of contact information. Coincidently, other efforts at creating resource directories for Holyoke were already underway. There is quite a history of such efforts, and some frustration that each directory is short-lived, lacking on-going maintenance. A renewed effort is being made. I've titled this page “Holyoke Unites” because that's the title of a proposal prepared by a subcommittee in August and presented to the “Healthy Holyoke: Coalition of Coalitions” meeting 9/26/2007, where it was accepted.
NOTE: This webpage is my own attempt, starting 9/27/07, to keep track of some website examples and good ideas that are surfacing. I may add historical notes, too, to acknowledge past efforts. I hope it contributes to the overall effort, but this is not the official or approved product of any group. -- Sandy Ward, volunteer
- Holyoke Unites - one-page proposal. Drafted in August 2007 by Jenny Navasky, Holyoke Health Center, on behalf of the resource directory subcommittee chaired by Jody Spitz, Holyoke Family Literacy Coalition.
- The real website, developed by a team of UMass students, was “Launched” on April 8, 2008.
- Training sessions on how to update website entries were held April 15-24.
- Amherst College J-term student project
- Good local Wiki example: HCC's SocialServiceInfo directory, based on pbwiki software

- Internet resources listed as part of Healthy City Fall River Home Page
- The Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services has posted a new website at Mass 211 that provides a database that can be searched to obtain updated listings of health and human services throughout the Commonwealth.
- CISA has a very impressive online directory of Food and Farm products: see South Deerfield example or Holyoke, or use the Search box to search for a topic like manure! Note the photo and wikipedia link that appears.
- Passport Holyoke a website for Arts and cultural events in Holyoke. Designed by cdeVision of Holyoke. Note its Calendar.

- SCI Dorchester.org Betty mentioned in our Oct 22 mtg. From website: “MyDorchester.org is a social networking website dedicated to building social capital and increasing civic engagement in the Dorchester community. This community building tool was initiated by SCI Dorchester's Dorchester Guide Project, with the support of community partners, as a launching pad to develop a site to connect people to people; people to resources & opportunities, people to groups & organizations; and people to ways to get involved in their neighborhood.
”
- CommuniShare. Allison Reid submitted this as example. “CommuniShare is an easy-to-use web-based software program that helps communities of all kinds to communicate and share their own interests and resources. Community members can participate if, and as much, as they like, revealing whatever they choose about themselves, in their own words, and only to other members of their community. Members only need an e-mail address and access to a Web browser to participate.”
- Commonwealth College - www.comcol.umass.edu. Carol submitted this as example for these reasons: a) clear links for different users on front page and subsequent pages, b) neat and easy to navigate.
- http://www.umass.edu/itprogram/ from Carol
- Community Tool Box Tom said this site was recently re-designed. Mission: Promoting community health and development by connecting people, ideas and resources.
- Trustees of the Reservation. Ivelisse suggested that we look at the Properties section. Note how the properties are listed, and each is linked to its own page. Consistent design for content about each property.
- SAMPLE drafts by Sandy (based on Nov 14 meeting notes): Homepage example 1 and slight variants in design 100% with borders; 80%; and Fixed width.
- Sample Bilingual pages: DraftB with photos.

- Janet Grant forwarded this announcement: “ CESAR Launches Maryland Community Services Locator (MDCSL) Beta Website.” CESAR = Center for Substance Abuse Research, at the University of Maryland at College Park.
“Service providers and the general public now have an easy-to-use tool to locate criminal justice and social service programs and resources within Maryland--the Maryland Community Services Locator (MDCSL). The interactive MDCSL website (http://www.mdcsl.org) allows users to quickly find detailed resource listings, including maps and directions to program sites, for a variety of community services.” [Note: you must first specify what services or location you want, then submit search. Results include name, address, map, but no description.]
- Holyoke Page at Mass.gov site This is a handy compilation of links for Holyoke. Note the handy tabs (“For residents”, etc.) across top, but unfortunately those take you to general pages --not Holyoke specific. Then you can't get back to this page easily. This page led me to some other (outdated?) Holyoke community pages, e.g.,
- Tom Wolff searched the web for the 35 names of Holyoke coalitions that he got from Betty, and reports as of December 18, 2007, “Most do not show up at all. A small number have their own web site. Some have a page on someone else's site. Some only a reference on someone's site.
So we will have to talk at the next meeting about what we want to do about making these coalitions accessible on the web.” He found 12 and sent his list to Sandy, who added them to the HCHL Holyoke Information page.
- February 2008. Sandy created a page about Directories to help orient the UMass Dean's Book students who are helping us gather information.
- A free webcalendar: sourceforge.net/projects/webcalendar
- An example of the above software is at
www.uunorthampton.org/webcalendar
- Google Calendar (about)
- Example of a Google calendar used by a church in Santa Rosa, CA
- See the 3-month calendar displayed at top of Passport Holyoke homepage. This is also called the “Community Calendar” (in link from City of Holyoke's main webpage).
- Public Events calendar on City of Holyoke website
- SABES Calendar - built using Plone, an
open-source
content management system (CMS), which is a type of database. Plone runs on Zope, an open-source server software application. Both Plone and Zope are available free of charge; but to pay programmers who actually can modify Plone
to suit your needs generally cost money, typically $90-110 per hour, or several thousands for a complex project.
- DC Learn's Literacy Calendar for Washington D.C. Note the “Export” feature at lower left; calendar entries can be exported in plain text or other formats (e.g., cvs for palm). This calendar uses free software called Plans Calendar.
- Another free calendar is Calendars.Net, which has been used by the Holyoke Youth Task Force. See HYTF example. “Calendars Net is a free interactive web calendar hosting service, where you and anyone you choose can post events visible and printable by whomever you choose, or everyone.” Available also in Spanish or other languages (as translated by Google).

In January 2007 three students in an Amherst College J-Term course worked with Jenny Navasky, Holyoke Health Center, and created a draft of a Community Resources booklet. Their focus was on YOUTH services, but they included more. They provided print versions in Spanish and English, plus an on-line version of this guide (with option for sorting alphabetically OR by categories), an on-line Street/Resource map of Holyoke with agencies and bus routes shown. They also created a wallet size Teen Health/Prevention Resource/Help Card with essential numbers for teens. Jenny edited the card, which has been published by HHC. The bigger booklet became a project of the Holyoke Family Literacy Coalition, coordinated by Jody Spitz; a subcommittee met several times in spring 2007. New people, including Judy Atkin, joined this effort after the first Coalition of Coalitions meeting --rather than start an entirely new project.
The Holyoke CHNA has for years held “Connecting the Dots” workshops for exchange of information among various health-care and social services agencies serving Holyoke. There is a spreadsheet of participants in the May 2006 workshop.
The Holyoke Council on Aging published a directory of services for seniors. Not updated recently (created with help of HCC students, under a grant, prior to 2003). Sandy has a copy: Holyoke Seniors Information Guide.
Enlace de Familias has for years provided an Information and referral service, and is willing to devote staff time for this new effort, as well as host a website.
The public libraries of Western Massachusetts provide Community Information Online as part of the C/W MARS services of WMRLS.
A state-wide directory of health-related services has been created under funding from NLM: Go Local Massachusetts.
For a Holyoke-specific directory of health services, I used to link to a webpage on the City Of Holyoke's website (and to Enlace's former webpage) but these were out of date, so several years ago I created my own short directory for the HCHL website. See www.holyokehealth.info/holyokeinfo.html.
