HCHL meeting at Holyoke Public Library. Minutes.

12/10/04
Sandy and Jennifer submitted the first Quarterly Report to the NN/LM New England Region (UMass-Worcester).

12/7/04
Jennifer and Sandy met with Heidi Thomson of Girls, Inc. to tour the Holyoke Teen Center and discuss plans for training and collaboration. Photos of the Teen Center.

11/30/04
Jennifer conducted first training sessions for HPL staff. Main focus was on MedlinePlus.

11/10/04
Jennifer and Sandy attended orientation training at Western Massachusetts Funding Resource Center, Springfield. Jen returned on 11/12 to search the excellent database.

11/9/04
Sandy and Jennifer attended the CHNA Forum on Emergency services, Basic needs.

11/8/04
Jennifer developed and distributed a pre-training survey to staff at Holyoke Public Library. Sandy met with the financial assistant at HPL and signed the first invoice to be sent to NN/LM for reimbursement from our grant (to cover Jennifer's first two weeks of pay).

10/29/04
Sandy and Jennifer attended a DPH Forum: Public Health in the 21st Century held at Holyoke Community College. Speakers included Christine Ferguson (Commissioner, DPH), Malena Hood (Center for Health Information, Statistics, Research, and Evaluation), and Jay Breines (Holyoke Health Center).

10/25-27/04
Jennifer visited Gail Weirick, Western Massachusetts Center for Healthy Communities on Monday, attended a workshop taught by Michelle Eberle, Consumer Health Information Coordinator for New England, NN/LM, on Tuesday and spent Wed morning with Sandy at NR.

Sandy and Jennifer attended the Downtown Revitalization meeting and talked with Mayor Mike Sullivan.

10/20/04
Maria Pagan introduced Jennifer Hartley to staff at Holyoke Public library. Sandy and Jennifer spent the morning in the library at Nuestras Raices.

Annual Meeting, Monday October 18, 1:30-3:00 pm at the Holyoke Public Library. Jennifer Hartley was introduced and welcomed. Officers for 2005 were elected. See Minutes. Photos.

10/5/04
Jennifer Hartley accepted our part-time position of Consumer Health Information Coordinator.

10/4/04
We are seeking nominations for Officers for 2005. Election of officers for HCHL, Inc., will occur at the Annual Meeting, Monday October 18, 1:30-3:00 pm at the Holyoke Public Library. Positions include President, Vice-President, Clerk and Treasurer as described in our bylaws.

9/23/04
The Sun (local weekly newpaper) publishes short article "Ward surprised by Civic Pride Award" on page 5. "Ward's goal is to give access to health information to anyone who needs it. The grant will provide money for a person to do outreach at the library."

We got the grant!
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has recently announced funding of 40 projects nationwide, including ours.

Project description from NLM announcement: "Holyoke Consumer Health Library, Inc. will support and enhance access to reliable health information in coordination with six Community Partners (Holyoke Public Library, Holyoke Health Center, Mercy Women's Health Center, Girls Incorporated of Holyoke, and the Holyoke Council on Aging. The vision of the project is to create a network of consumer health access stations at health and human service agencies in Holyoke, MA. A Consumer Health Information Coordinator will train staff at site to use NLM consumer health databases and will work with agency staff to plan and conduct outreach to their clients, including low-income Spanish speaking consumers, women seeking health care, pregnant and parenting teenagers, families raising vegetables in community gardens, teens at the Holyoke Teen Center, elders at the Senior Center, and the general public."

We are now recruiting candidates for the part-time position of Consumer Health Information Coordinator. See the Position description. Please contact Sandy Ward as soon as possible if you are interested or wish to recommend someone. We plan to interview candidates in early October.
